Get To Know Three of Our 2024 Summer Interns!

July 24, 2024
Water Mission summer interns at headquarters in Charleston, SC.

Written by Kaylee Bhasin, Social Media and Public Relations Intern

Each summer, Water Mission hosts seven to 12 interns to be part of the ministry’s work to transform lives through safe and Living Water. This year, nine young professionals joined the team. Over the summer, they have been furthering their faith and utilizing their skills to help save lives and transform communities with safe water and the gospel. These interns are involved in six departments, including:

  • Disaster Response;
  • Marketing and Communications;
  • Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL);
  • Living Water;
  • Supply Chain Management; and
  • Program Design and Standards.

To celebrate National Intern Day on July 25, a few of our summer interns shared their experience with Water Mission through a Q&A session. Read on to hear what Morgan Norris, Disaster Response intern; Erin Lynes, Living Water intern; and Allie Bones, MEL intern, have learned so far during their time at Water Mission.

How have you grown in your skills in this internship?

Morgan: I think the biggest skill I have grown in has been communication. So much of my interactions with the rest of the Disaster Response team are online, which is not something I have ever really experienced before. Beyond that, I am studying structural engineering in school, so doing water-related things like working on a new water treatment system, the Cage RO, has been my favorite part.

Morgan Norris, Disaster Response intern, helps a Water Mission volunteer prepare to send treatment systems to the Disaster Assistance Response Team responding to Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean.

Erin: In this internship, I have been challenged with improving Water Mission’s current Church and Community Mobilization Program modules where I’ve added new cultural explanations, proverbs, and examples. I have also grown in my ability to develop content catered to desired training outcomes and have increased my biblical understanding within the scope of evangelism and gospel-sharing.

Allie: I have grown a lot in my technical skills. This internship has allowed me to learn different data collection, analysis, and visualization programs but has also given me a sense of independence over my projects and assignments which has been so impactful in my professional development.

What has made this internship different from others?

Morgan: The people and culture. At other internships, everyone around me has been very nice, but at Water Mission, there has been a level of intentionality I haven’t seen from others. Also, having prayer at the beginning and end of everything has allowed me to keep a strong focus on the Lord throughout my day.

Erin: Water Mission truly feels like family. In the time I have been blessed to serve alongside Water Mission, I have developed great mentors. I feel that no matter what department you are supporting as an intern, you get a great feel for the organization and each of its departments and functions.

Many of Water Mission’s interns work remotely, allowing them to be involved in the ministry from all over the country. Erin Lynes, Living Water intern, works remotely from her home.

Allie: This internship has been different than other internships because of the mentorship and professional development component. I'm not only completing tasks and working on projects; I'm a member of the team and I can tell that the MEL team cares for my professional development. As I reflect on the summer, I can witness my growth through one-on-ones, team meetings, and the intern cohort meetings.

How do you think this internship has prepared you for your future career?

Morgan: I have learned a lot this summer about how to work with the Lord at the center of it all. Wherever I end up in my future career, I will be able to carry that with me.

Erin: Interning for the Living Water department at Water Mission has provided great clarity for the path the Lord is leading me down.

Allie: This internship has definitely prepared me for my future career because it has revealed to me that I really enjoy MEL and data science. I know more of what jobs I would like and what I would not like, which has helped me as I have been looking for full-time jobs once this internship ends.

Overall, the 2024 summer interns feel that their time at Water Mission has both prepared them for their future careers and fostered their faith journeys.
