Equipping Local Churches: The Living Water Program Empowered Omar to Serve His Community
Around the world, safe water projects are opening doors for Water Mission to partner with local churches and together show God’s love in communities. Our Living Water program supports, equips, and empowers the work of local churches to share the gospel, serve those in need, and deepen their understanding and application of scripture.
Omar is a grandfather in La Union, Mexico, who is dedicated to helping his community grow in their knowledge of God. Omar’s life was drastically changed by the gospel, so he knows its transformative power.
“When I was young...I developed an addiction to alcohol,” Omar said. “I was having many problems with my family because of my addiction.”
Some church people visited [me], and I submitted my life to Christ more than 30 years ago. After surrendering my life to Christ, I saw all the changes in my family and my life.
Now, Omar is the assistant pastor of his local church in La Union. The head pastor is responsible for several churches across the remote jungle region and can only visit La Union once a month, so Omar helps lead the church’s day-to-day work in the community.
When Water Mission established a safe water project in La Union, our Living Water staff implemented our nine-module Church and Community Mobilization Program. Omar was among those who attended, seeking to learn best practices for serving church members and the wider community.
The first great thing that was remarkable for me was the story of the woman at the well. She wasn’t in the church…but Jesus came to her anyway. We learned that we must serve [everyone] and not just other church people.
The story of the woman at the well, as found in John 4:3-42 of the Bible, is a key part of the CCMP module focused on equipping the local church to share the Living Water message of Jesus Christ while caring for people in need. Omar and his church are putting this into practice in La Union.
After attending Water Mission’s Living Water training, Omar felt encouraged and empowered to meet needs in his community.
We started to coordinate visits to people in need. We go and visit and bring them food. We collect money to support others when they are ill.
Through your prayer and partnership, lives are being transformed. Thank you for empowering local church leaders like Omar and fellow believers around the world to show God’s love in their communities.
