2019 Walk for Water: Uniting to End the Global Water Crisis

“It was incredibly powerful to see the empathy and energy that the Charleston community brought to this year’s Walk for Water,” said Kerry Dodson, Water Mission’s director of events and engagement. “I know that the participation and advocacy of this year’s walkers, along with the support they raised, will have a lasting impact on our neighbors around the world, the global water crisis, and Charleston itself.”
The three-mile route was designed to replicate the average distance traveled each day by women and children to collect water. Throughout the Walk, participants learned about the need for safe water in Southeast Asia, East Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and in crises such as refugee and disaster situations. They followed the stories of Hayani, a young mother in Indonesia; Dina, a 13-year-old student in Malawi; Dada Angelo, a father and refugee in Uganda; and Hortencia, a single mother of six in Mexico. Together, we celebrated the new opportunities that safe water has created for these four individuals and so many more.
Walkers also had the chance to watch Water Mission’s patented Living Water Treatment System in action. After filling their buckets with dirty water at our headquarters, participants walked back to the park and poured the water into the treatment system for it to be transformed into clear, safe water.
Walking alongside thousands of people for a cause that impacts one-third of the world’s population is an experience like no other. Because of our incredible Charleston community, families around the world will be given lasting safe water and sanitation solutions for the very first time.
