Indonesia
Located in Southeast Asia between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, Indonesia is composed of thousands of islands and more than 300 ethnic groups. Home to nearly 280 million people, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world and is the most populous Muslim country in the world.

The Need for Safe Water in Indonesia
International Poverty Rate
3% of the population lives on less than $2.15 per day.
Safe Water
70% of the population lacks access to safe water.
Sanitation
12% of the population lacks access to sanitation.
Basic Hygiene
21% of the population lacks access to basic hygiene.
Despite having one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and the largest in Southeast Asia, more than 26 million Indonesians live below the poverty line. While some progress has been made in providing access to safe drinking water and sanitation, the majority of the Indonesian population lacks access to safely managed drinking water. Water-related illnesses are a major cause of death among children under the age of five.
Many hard-to-reach communities in Indonesia lack basic infrastructure like electricity and roads. This means many are left without access to lifesaving water. The Nusa Tenggara region in Timor, also known as “the island with a lack of water,” recently declared a state of emergency following an earthquake and one of the country’s longest-running droughts. The local government identified this region as an area urgently needing access to safe water.

Water Mission in Indonesia
Water Mission started working in Indonesia in 2005, responding to a devastating tsunami. Since then, we have provided safe water and hygiene solutions to more than 450,000 people.
In Indonesia, Water Mission implements safe water solutions through Way Mitra, a local partner. Working through Way Mitra helps Water Mission ensure full compliance with Indonesian regulations while meeting the safe water and hygiene needs of communities. Water Mission serves two regions in Indonesia: North Sumatra and East Nusa Tenggara. Our comprehensive approach emphasizes training local leaders and residents to manage ongoing operations and maintenance.

Solutions in Indonesia
Design and build customized solutions using best-in-class technology and water treatment methods. Each community-based water project in Indonesia is characterized by:
- Community partnership for sustainability and follow-up;
- Long-term support for previously installed projects;
- Partnership and/or financial investment from local government;
- Continuous improvement and innovation in sustainable delivery models; and
- Prioritizing piped connections to institutions and households, providing convenient access to safe water at people’s homes, work, and places of worship.
Build community leaders’ WASH awareness, train WASH promoters, and engage communities with sustainable and affordable hygiene solutions they can support, including:
- WASH promotion and educational materials to teach healthy WASH behaviors in neighborhoods, schools, and healthcare facilities.
Respond to natural and humanitarian disasters in various ways, including:
- Emergency water treatment systems for communities, households, and institutions like schools and healthcare facilities;
- Hygiene training for communities; and
- Handwashing stations in healthcare facilities and other high-traffic areas.
