News From Ukraine: Dam Collapse Intensifies the Need for Safe Water
On Tuesday, June 6, Kakhovka dam in Ukraine collapsed, causing widespread flooding and destruction across the southern region. Access to safe water — already a challenge in the war-torn country — is now one of the most critical needs in the region following this disaster.
"Hundreds of thousands of people have been left without normal access to drinking water." — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
Water Mission has been working to meet urgent needs in the region since Russia invaded Ukraine more than a year ago. We have been serving 73,000 men, women, and children every day with lifesaving access to safe water. We are now deploying mobile safe water units to get safe, clean water flowing to people impacted by the destroyed Kakhovka dam. Please prayerfully consider joining us in responding to the Kakhovka dam collapse in Ukraine. Help men, women, and children in need today by giving the lifesaving gift of safe water in the southern region of Ukraine.
Recognizing the great need across the region, Water Mission immediately deployed staff to the region in February 2022 to serve. After meeting immediate needs, we shifted to providing safe water within Ukraine, working closely with local governments and our partners. Through the support of generous partners, Water Mission has trained Ukrainian water technicians to install and operate 44 safe water systems in seven cities. We also built and deployed five mobile safe water units. In total, our systems have produced more than 7 million gallons of safe water.
As the conflict with Russia continues, the need for safe water remains significant. The Kakhovka dam collapse only intensifies this need. Water Mission remains committed to supporting our neighbors in Ukraine with safe water and God’s love. We are thankful for the faithful and generous support of so many friends who enable us to bring lifesaving water and hope to people who are hurting and in need in Ukraine.
