Become a Thirst Quencher: Reach Children Around the World with Safe Water

September 4, 2024

Each month, a community of faithful friends helps provide people in need with safe water. We refer to our monthly givers as Thirst Quenchers, a unique title recognizing a commitment to transforming communities with safe water and the Living Water message of Jesus Christ.

Together, the Thirst Quencher community has changed many lives, including the lives of two 14-year-old girls from opposite sides of the world. Shalay in Loma Negra, Peru, and Msekwa in Igamba, Tanzania, have one thing in common: Both girls relied on contaminated water that made them too sick to experience the joys of childhood.

Shalay shares, “My favorite thing to do is dancing. I am in a dance troupe with my friends where we learn and perform different types of dances from the Piura region of Peru.”  Yet Shalay’s consumption of unsafe water often prevented her from enjoying this activity.

14-year-old Shalay wears traditional dance attire for her community. Although she loves dancing with her friends, water-related illnesses often prevent her from doing what she loves.

“My little girl hurt with much stomach pain before,” Shalay’s mother remembers. “One day, we took her to the doctor. The doctor commented that [the water] was the reason why my daughter was always getting so sick.”

Likewise, Msekwa loves singing in her church choir but missed church and school due to water-related illness. Before Water Mission intervened in Igamba, Msekwa walked two hours round trip to collect unsafe drinking water. “There are water sources nearby, but that water can’t be used for drinking because it is salty,” she says. “We have to move very far [to collect drinking water]. But when we drink that water, we get stomach issues. When I get sick, I can’t go to school.”

Thanks to our Thirst Quencher community, we were able to implement safe water solutions in Loma Negra and Igamba. In Loma Negra, Water Mission installed a Living Water Treatment System and reverse osmosis system to dissolve contaminants in the salty water. In Igamba, water is now treated and pumped to a storage tank, where it then flows to strategically placed tap stands in the community.

Thanks to our faithful monthly donors, Igamba now has safe water that flows to community tap stands. Water Mission also installed systems to treat the salty water in Loma Negra, Peru.

“I feel good that we will have safe water for cooking and taking baths,” Msekwa rejoices. “I am so excited to have safe water.”   Now, Shalay and Msekwa can participate in the activities they love without the added stress of water-related illnesses.  Shalay says, “I am glad to be healthy enough to dance.”

Shalay and Msekwa now have the opportunity to enjoy their childhoods without worrying about unsafe water. For $50 a month, you can become a Thirst Quencher and help save lives like theirs.

When you partner with Water Mission as a monthly giver, you directly impact the lives of girls like Shalay and Msekwa. You give them the hope that they will no longer have to worry about water-related illnesses or walk hours for water.

We invite you to participate in this life change by becoming a Thirst Quencher. By giving $50 a month, you will join a committed community of givers passionate about reaching people with safe water and the opportunity to hear about Jesus. You will also receive monthly stories and videos with exclusive updates from the ministry.
