Students learn about the global water crisis and the work of Water Mission

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

Jesus set the ultimate example of service. These activities and resources will help children learn how they can be the hands and feet of Jesus to impact people in need of safe and Living Water, meeting physical and spiritual needs worldwide.

Activities

Engage children with hands-on activities that bring global water challenges to life. These interactive experiences, like simulating a Walk for Water or exploring the journey of refugees, help kids understand the daily struggles faced by millions around the world. By participating, children gain empathy and a deeper appreciation for the importance of safe water while discovering how they can make a difference.

Simulate a Walk for Water

Fill a 5-gallon jerrycan or other container with water. Have kids take turns picking it up and carrying it throughout the week. Discuss how 5 gallons of water is the average amount an African family/household uses in a day (compared to 300 gallons for an American family), and often, women and children walk an average of 3 miles per day to collect water that is dirty and can make them sick. Ask questions to demonstrate retention and award small prizes.

Interactive Refugee Experience

Lead the older children through the Refugee Experience to explore the impactful journey of refugees and the vital role water plays in shaping their experiences. To request these resources, please contact your Water Mission representative.

Fundraise

Inspire your Water Mission Kids to make a lasting impact through creative fundraising efforts that support Water Mission in providing safe, life-changing water to families in need. Whether it’s hosting lemonade stands, bake sales, or concerts, these activities empower children to use their talents and resources to help others. Celebrate every milestone, knowing that $50 provides safe and Living Water for one person, transforming lives physically and spiritually. Together, your Water Mission Kids can bring hope and make a difference in communities around the world.

Read about and be encouraged by what other churches are doing to raise awareness and funds through their VBS.

Encourage the children through Scotty's story and Harper's Story to raise money and awareness for Water Mission using lemonade stand resources.

Encourage the children to make an impact by decluttering their closets and selling unused toys or by baking and selling cookies or baked goods. Additionally, they can ask their parents to organize a carwash in the neighborhood, asking participants to contribute to Water Mission's cause. Don't forget to promote the event by putting up posters and leveraging social media and community boards for wider reach.

If the children are musical, encourage them to host a concert in their neighborhood, at your church, or even on Zoom. Promote it to friends and family, and sell tickets at the door or on a cash app. Invite the children to share why they are raising money and how their donation will help save lives.

Encourage children to bring money with them to give as an offering to help kids in need. This could be done each day or at the end of the week. If you choose to collect money throughout the week, we encourage you to set up a friendly competition between children, such as between boys and girls or between VBS teams. Create a board with thermometers to track the amount of funds raised by each group or team. This will inspire children to raise more funds to reach a certain goal or beat the opposing group.
