On January 7, 2020, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Puerto Rico, leaving thousands of people without permanent shelter, power, and access to clean, safe water. Less than a week later, a second major earthquake struck the island.
While infrastructure in the southern region was especially affected, widespread power outages have been reported across the island. Given ongoing structural concerns as a result of the earthquakes and potential aftershocks, Puerto Rico Emergency Management Agency (PREMA) is setting up temporary outdoor shelters in selected locations on the island. In coordination with PREMA, we are deploying and operating safe water systems that function despite power outages.
The recent seismic activity aggravates Puerto Rico’s already fragile state of safety and economy. Throughout Puerto Rico, many are still struggling to rebuild after Hurricane Maria devastated much of the island in September 2017. Since then, Water Mission has been helping to build Puerto Rico’s resilience against natural disasters. Our response to the earthquakes considers both immediate and continuing needs.
Your gift will provide emergency water systems in safe locations across the island and ensure continuous water flow—serving the people of Puerto Rico now and in the long term.
Please pray for the people of Puerto Rico and for our staff as they work to serve those in dire need. To join our relief efforts, please give today.
