Disaster Response
Disaster response has been integral to Water Mission’s work since the very beginning. George and Molly Greene’s response to the devastation caused in Honduras by Hurricane Mitch was the catalyst for founding Water Mission in 2001. Since then, Water Mission has responded to many of the most devastating natural and humanitarian crises by providing access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) solutions. Disaster response continues to be one of the core ways we love and serve our global neighbors.

How Does Water Mission Respond to Disasters?

Access to safe water is among the most critical needs following a disaster. It quenches thirst, enables critically needed services like meals, shelter, and medical attention, and helps prevent the spread of waterborne illnesses, which are especially deadly to young children. With more than 20 years of experience responding to natural disasters and humanitarian crises, Water Mission has an extensive background in providing immediate and long-term safe water solutions in complex contexts.
When disasters strike, Water Mission quickly determines when and how we can most strategically add value. Our professional Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) includes engineers, project managers, WASH officers, and logistics personnel with extensive experience in diverse and complex contexts. These experts know how to get water flowing quickly in any scenario.
Water Mission’s response starts with a rapid on-the-ground needs assessment and water quality analysis to determine the most efficient, effective solutions. We connect with partners to maximize impact.

Why Safe Water During Disasters?
When people experience a natural or humanitarian disaster, they often lose everything and struggle to meet their basic needs. Having access to safe water following a disaster is critical for immediate needs and ensuring secondary crises caused by water-related illnesses do not further increase pain and suffering. Water Mission’s disaster response efforts to provide rapid access to safe water are foundational for meeting hygiene and sanitation needs.
