Without a sanitary place to relieve themselves, people lack privacy and face indignity. It can be especially dangerous for women and girls to attend to their needs without protection from animals and strangers. Poor sanitation and hygiene practices result in the spread of diseases that can sometimes be fatal.

Adequate sanitation can lead to significant health, social, and economic improvements. As a leader in the global water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector, Water Mission’s sanitation solutions are customized to the unique needs of the community served.

Sustainable Development Goal 6

SDG 6, target 6.2 focuses on ending open defecation and attending to the need of women, girls, and those in vulnerable situations.

Sanitation

Healthy Latrine

Water Mission's Healthy Latrine is one solution that provides safe sanitation and restores dignity. It provides privacy and a toilet that needs only a little water and no electricity. We work with communities to construct these using locally sourced materials. Each pit is estimated to last 15 years, after which plumbing can be re-routed to a new pit.

Hygiene

Handwashing Promotion

Good health relies on an understanding of healthy hygiene practices. So, we train local volunteers (often mothers, grandparents, teachers, church leaders, and nurses) as WASH Promotors. These residents teach their neighbors, empowering them with the knowledge of where germs originate and how to stop their spread with effective handwashing, hygienic food prep, waste management, and bathing.
