Water Mission, a Christian engineering nonprofit, will host its 18th annual Walk for Water on March 23, 2024, to increase public awareness of the global water crisis. This crisis leaves 2 billion people—one-quarter of the world’s population—without access to clean, safe water. Each year, thousands of people from across the Lowcountry rally together for this unique event to raise funds and awareness to help people in need. Those interested in participating can register here.

In many countries, people walk more than three miles daily to collect water, a burden that is often placed on women and children. This takes time away from school and work, and the walks can be dangerous. The water they collect is often unsafe and makes their families sick. Walk for Water participants will walk to simulate the walks that these women and children make each day to collect water for their families. By joining the Walk for Water, participants will help Water Mission provide accessible, lifesaving safe water solutions for communities around the world.

“The Walk for Water in Charleston, now in its 18th year, has continued to grow, offering our community a special opportunity to gather together and transform thousands of lives,” said Water Mission CEO and President George Greene IV, PE. “The approximately three-mile walk route symbolizes the miles that millions of women and children worldwide walk daily gathering water for their families. The water they collect is often dirty and filled with bacteria that cause illness and even death. Our goal for this year’s walk is to raise enough funds to transform the lives of 15,000 people around the world with safe water access.”

On March 23, walkers will gather at Riverfront Park at 1061 Everglades Avenue, North Charleston, S.C. 29405. The Walk will begin at 9 a.m. The Walk for Water raises funds and awareness to fight the global water crisis, but it is also a fun way to spend a Saturday morning! Participants can enjoy food trucks, interactive activities, live music, and so much more at Riverfront Park.

People can register online at walkforwater.com/charleston, join an existing team, or start their own Walk team.  Registration is $25 for adults, $10 for youth, and free for children ages four and under.  https://youtu.be/N9xWh8DcVaM
