World Toilet Day

November 19, 2014

World Toilet Day Graphic

When you've grown up with a toilet your entire life, it's quite hard to imagine how life would be without one. For over one-third of the people on this earth, that's every day. No place of privacy. Dangerous walks outside of your community. A higher likelihood of leaving school if you're a young girl. A greater chance of catching diarrhea, cholera, dysentery and well, the list goes on.

That's why on the second annual World Toilet Day, we're pausing to celebrate the gifts that proper sanitation bring: dignity, cleanliness, and an overwhelming joy.

When household Healthy Latrines are built by communities with a latrine mold, "it is received with great joy because most people have never had that privilege before," explains Elsa Paula, one of Water Missions Haiti's country directors. "For the first time, they understand that the Healthy Latrine prevents the spread of disease in the community through the sanitation trainings we give them along with the latrine. There's happiness and in some cases an overwhelming joy because they have never owned or even seen a toilet."
