World Toilet Day
Water Missions International has constructed thousands of Healthy Latrines™ to provide a sustainable sanitation solution for those in need.
In the aftermath of disaster, the sanitation crisis becomes all too apparent. Following the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, an outbreak of cholera claimed thousands of lives due to contaminated water and lack of adequate sanitation. In order to avoid a situation like Haiti, Water Missions International staff are working hard to prevent outbreaks of cholera in the Philippines.
After the Super Typhoon Haiyan slammed the Philippines, one of the biggest pleas was for sanitation solutions. Officials asked for toilets to be flown in along with food and water. As stories of the destruction began to come in, the dire need for sanitation grew.
Water Missions International regularly conducts health and hygiene training to teach communities how to prevent diseases from human waste.
Water Missions International has partnered with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in Haiti to work to meet sanitation needs, installing hundreds of latrines to provide this basic human right. We’re working together again to provide informational brochures, translated into local languages, to disaster affected areas in the Philippines. Each brochure explains proper water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices, such as why it’s important to wash hands and how to do so properly. They also explain why it’s important to drink water that’s been properly treated. We will be working with ADRA to distribute these brochures at large community gathering points, which could be anything from a water tap stand to a church.
