Why We Walk
Now children play around Reina's community's safe water system, free from worry of waterborne illness.
Every day, millions will wake up before the sun rises to trek miles away to get a simple bucket full of water, only to turn right back around for the long walk home. This one container of water provides for an entire family’s daily water needs. It’s used for cooking, cleaning, drinking, and watering gardens. But it’s often dirty and contaminated with disease. The very water people need to survive can make them sick, and even lead to death from water-related illness.
In the United States, we have the luxury of safe, clean water readily at hand. It’s hard to imagine what it means to walk miles for water, which is why Water Missions International started the Walk for Water, an event designed to simulate the journey most make every day and raise awareness about the daily water reality for millions around the world.
We know that people like Reina shouldn’t have to struggle with their health because of the water they drink. We know that the daily reality can change, just as hers did, which is why we want you to join us on March 22nd in Charleston to Walk for Water.
We walk for women like Reina, for children who deserve a chance to go to school instead of staying home sick, and for countless others who have never known any alternative than muddy water riddled with parasites.
