Super Typhoon Haiyan
Help provide relief for victims of Haiyan: Water Missions International has mobilized response to provide safe water for those in need.
Water Missions International (WMI) is responding to critical needs in the wake of Super Typhoon Haiyan. WMI has been monitoring the storm and began dialogue with partner organizations to strategize an effective and appropriate response to the disaster before it made landfall on Friday. This morning (Sunday, November 10), WMI mobilized staff members from our offices in Charleston, SC, and Cambodia, as well as a team member from Denmark to deploy to the Philippines. They are bound for Manila to meet equipment and stage response efforts. If you would like to partner with us in our disaster response efforts, you can help now. WMI is coordinating with multiple organizations and working through the logistics of equipment mobilization at this time. We will continue to keep you, our partners, updated with accurate information concerning our relief efforts. For now, please know that we are actively working to effectively respond to desperate need in the Philippines and other areas affected by Haiyan. Your donation to our disaster relief fund today is critical to our efforts to move quickly in order to meet immediate need. Would you pray with us for the people of the Philippines and other regions affected by this storm who have been left with nothing, for governments as they seek to meet critical needs and partner with organizations like Water Missions International, and for the international community's response? We covet your prayers for our traveling staff, for our staff working on logistics, and for clarity, effective partnership, and efficiency as we work to bring safe drinking water to those in need. We cannot do this without you. You can make a difference with us in the Philippines and other areas affected by the storm today. Your support will enable us to provide critical relief for those left in the devastating wake of Super Typhoon Haiyan. Would you consider a gift today to provide life-saving relief for the people of the Philippines and others who may be suffering from disaster? --------------------------------------------------------------------- Original post published Friday, November 8, 2013 | 14:01 EST Super Typhoon Haiyan, the largest storm in recorded history, struck the Philippines this morning, slamming the islands of this nation with rain and gusts of wind up to 235 mph. Flooding and sustained winds of 195 mph have destroyed property and displaced thousands. With power lines and communications down, it’s difficult to discern the magnitude of Haiyan’s impact and the havoc it will continue to wreck as it moves towards neighboring nations. Disastrous flooding contaminates water sources and creates a scarcity of the one thing most vital to survival—safe water. The damage from storms like Haiyan can destroy infrastructure that normally keeps safe water flowing. The probability of death from waterborne diseases is astronomically higher in the aftermath of a natural disaster.
Super typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines this morning.
Water Missions International is currently providing consultation to partnering organizations on how to help those devastated by this storm. If needed, we have 40 disaster response units ready to ship and our staff is on call to mobilize and help prevent the outbreak of cholera and similar diseases through safe water treatment systems.
As Haiyan continues to make its way east towards Southeast Asia, we’re mindful that disaster response may be need in other areas. Our staff in Cambodia and Indonesia stand ready to respond.
We’ll provide updates as we gain a better understanding of the needs of those affected by this unprecedented typhoon and the capacity in which Water Missions International will respond. As the world waits out this storm, we ask that you keep the people of the Philippines in your thoughts and prayers. We would also appreciate prayers for our staff in Indonesia as they continue to work to provide safe water and sanitation to the people of South East Asia.
