Responding to Ecuador's Earthquake

May 3, 2016
Senior Process Engineer Bert Morrison is responding to Ecuador's earthquake with Samaritan’s Purse to provide safe water at hospitals affected by the recent disaster. With a water system installed at the Samaritan's Purse field hospital in Chone, Morrison is training a local water system manager to keep the system running long-term.  Setting up a Living Water Treatment System in Ecuador
“It has been 17 days now since the 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Life in the bigger towns is beginning to return to normal, or the new normal of rebuilding.” - Bert Morrison, Water Mission engineer in Ecuador
In addition to the hospital in Chone, Morrison has also worked to install a Living Water™ Treatment System at the hospital in Jama, which serves 120 patients. It is now treating water that is trucked to the hospital by the local government, supplying safe water to medical staff and earthquake victims. Thank you for praying with us in the Ecuador earthquake recovery effort.
April 28 Safe water is flowing at the Samaritan’s Purse Field Hospital in Chone, Ecuador! With recent news that hospitals near the epicenter of the earthquake are overwhelmed with a surgery backlog, Samaritan’s Purse has upgraded the field hospital to a full “Tier 3” surgical hospital. Water is currently trucked in by the local government, then filtered, treated and chlorinated with Water Mission treatment equipment. A water tower has been built to flow water directly into the surgical operating room, outdoor showers, and tap stands at the hospital. In the operating room, hospital doctors are using two sinks with safe water to prepare for surgery and clean after surgery. Equally important, the sanitation from the sinks is piped to a large pit, providing a healthy environment for all hospital operations. “Two nights ago, they helicoptered in a 17-year-old boy who had been injured severely in the earthquake. His condition was very bad. He had lost a lot of blood, and the blood he was initially given was at the wrong pH, so he was close to dying when he arrived at the hospital.   The Samaritan’s Purse doctors worked frantically on him until about 1am, but they didn’t have a match for his blood type. So at about 2am, the electrician, another doctor, and a local Ecuadorian all donated their blood to save this kid’s life. The next day, he was doing much better. His brother finally arrived, and even though the injured boy was much better, he wanted to donate his blood. The nurse shared with him how Jesus shed his blood to save our lives.” - Senior Process Engineer Bert Morrison
