Responding To Cholera In Uganda
Today our staff installed a Living Water Treatment System™ to turn the community's water supply into safe water.
To date, cholera has killed two people in the fishing village of Mulwanda, and more than 100 people are sick with the deadly disease.
Water Missions staff in Uganda has been working quickly to help this community. Our staff are familiar with the area, having implemented three safe water solutions in nearby communities. WMI has installed a Living Water Treatment System™ in Mulwanda that takes water from Lake Victoria, which the village borders, and filters and treats the water with chlorine to kill any bacteria in the water, rendering it safe for consumption. In addition to the water treatment system, our staff will also work with community members to educate them on how to stop the spread of disease through proper health and hygiene behaviors, such as handwashing.
The 2,500 people of Mulwanda need access to safe water immediately to prevent Cholera from spreading.
As with every disaster response project, our hope is that this will be the first step in providing a permanent safe water solution for the people of Mulwanda; we want to prevent future illness, not just end the current problem.
We’ll continue to post updates on the situation in Mulwanda as our staff continue to work with this community. To learn more about this and other Water Missions International disaster response efforts, go here.
