Safe Water for Communities Living Water

Meeting Students' Special Needs in Kenya

April 22, 2024

One way of showing love is by listening to a person’s needs. Water Mission expresses our value of love by creating solutions that meet the unique needs of each community we serve.

For the children at Kiminini Special School in Kenya, this care resulted in life transformation. A national educational survey reports that more than one out of every 10 Kenyan children have disabilities. The majority live in rural areas where schools struggle to meet their unique needs. The Kiminini Special School serves children with physical impairments, most of whom use wheelchairs.

Prior to Water Mission’s project in Kiminini, the special school shared water with the adjacent primary school. Both relied on a faulty water pump and borehole that did not provide enough water. When water was scarce, the school sent children into the fields to find water, leaving the students in wheelchairs at the mercy of able-bodied friends to bring them water.

Thanks to your generous support, Water Mission not only got safe water flowing in Kiminini, but engineers also designed a custom water station at the special school.

A specially designed faucet allows students in wheelchairs to access water independently.

The spout height and proximity to the building provide easy access for those in wheelchairs. A unique drainage system prevents students in wheelchairs from being splashed. This custom safe water solution has improved handwashing and health and has restored dignity to students who can now wheel themselves to the faucet whenever they are thirsty.

Phillip Amukoya, a teacher at the school, says, “We are very grateful to Water Mission for the support they extended to this school and the children in the special section because it has ensured that we maintain good hygiene. May God bless Water Mission.”
