Living Water Through Safe Water

February 6, 2014
Jesus Christ told his followers, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:18-20). As a faith-based organization, we are called to share God’s love and truth whenever He presents us with an opportunity to do so. One of the ways we’re able to do this is by supporting missionaries in countries around the world with the provision of safe water access- for their personal needs and as an equipping tool for sharing the Gospel. Sometimes we have the opportunity to use our expertise for safe water engineering and community development to impact the training centers and epicenters of ministry growth and development. In the story we’re sharing today, a safe water project was established to provide for the care of missionaries in training in Malawi. We know the ripple effect of this project will reach generations. The Chisomo Training Center in Malawi didn’t have safe water. Students who came to learn how to minister to others would struggle with waterborne illnesses and sometimes, there simply wasn’t even enough water to go around for everyone. “We help people with Bible lessons to find eternal life, minister to others, and learn some vocational skills, but we cannot manage to help them with safe water,” the principal of the school told Water Missions International in an appeal for help. He told us how his students had no other choice but to drink from the same water source as livestock, how they were constantly ill, and how they missed lessons because of disease. The school spent much of its money on hospital bills to treat sick students. Safe Water Malawi Now the students and faculty of Chisomo Training Center can enjoy safe water. The staff and students of Chisomo Training Center didn’t expect to receive safe water, but Water Missions International quickly worked to provide a customized safe water solution for their needs. Water Missions International worked with the students to construct and install the project. As in all projects, we required the community to participate. The students came in droves to be part of the project. A member of the training center’s staff, Charles, told our team, “Working during the installation has given us a lesson that commitment has to be practiced even when it means benefiting others. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Jesus Christ to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Chisomo, Malawi The students and teachers of Chisomo celebrated when safe water finally flowed. Today the students of Chisomo Training Center are free from waterborne illness. The school no longer spends its money on hospital bills. Now, instead of struggling to get enough water, students can carry water bottles full of safe, clean water and easily refill them between classes. For the first time in the center’s history, students are learning uninterrupted by the strain of waterborne illness. The impact of safe water will ripple out as students graduate and journey home to minister to their own communities. They will carry with them the tools to meet the need for the Living Water message, and a better understanding for the importance of safe water.
