Living Water Program Bears Fruit in Mexico

Suyapa runs the lab and pharmacy in Colonia Hildago, Mexico. Most families in her community have wells, but the water is contaminated. Bottled water is expensive. Until recently, a majority of her customers had family members suffering from water-related illnesses. “The two most common diseases we saw were diarrhea and stomach illnesses,” Suyapa explains. “The third most common was dengue. In some seasons, rotavirus affects children especially badly.” 

Then, Water Mission installed a safe water project last fall. Now, all 2,800 residents have access to clean, safe water. But we are not only meeting physical needs.

Our Living Water program addresses spiritual needs through trainings that equip local leaders with sound biblical knowledge and discipleship tools to share the gospel and care for those in need. Suyapa attended the entire series and immediately put into practice what she learned, aiming to love others as Christ loves us.

“In our [pharmacy], there are some people who can’t pay. Now I know that the One who pays better is [God] in Heaven,” she says. “I say to people who don’t have any money, ‘You can pay me later,’ even if I know they won’t ever be able to. Or I just don’t ask for payment at all.” This generosity is inspired by Christ’s generous love for us. It is also a ripple effect made possible by friends of the ministry who—like Suyapa—choose to help those in need without asking for repayment. As Suyapa says, “God’s love is unconditional. He is always there for us [and] we should love others the same way.”
