A Letter From Peru: Water Becomes Hope for Mothers

A special Mother’s Day message from Vicky Espinoza, Peru Country Director.

In Chuicas, Peru, I met Susana, a young mother of two small children—her youngest is only five months older than my own son. She was born in this community and shared with me that while her husband goes to work, she stays home with their two children.

Before they had safe water, Susana had to walk long distances to fetch water, leaving her children at home. She worried deeply about leaving them alone while she went to collect untreated water, but she had to do it to prepare their meals.

Susana used to fear for her children’s safety and health, due to the unsafe water they consumed.

In January 2026, Water Mission commissioned a safe water project in the community of Chuicas, serving 520 people. With the installation of a reverse osmosis system, families can now access safe water every single day.

For Susana, having safe water means that she and her children are now safe from many dangers.

Susana told me that a couple of years ago, while she was pregnant, she had to go out to find water for cooking. During this time, she had an accident, suffered an injury, and had to see a doctor. Thankfully, both she and the baby were fine.

She also said that before, she didn’t know why the children often had diarrhea. Now that they have access to safe water, she has realized it was because of the unsafe water they were using, and she is finally at peace because her children are healthy and safe.

I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will execute justice for the needy.

Susana is also a member of her community’s Safe Water Committee, and she is proud of the impact this project has had on her children and neighbors. She is very active on the committee, passionate about ensuring her family and friends have safe water for years to come.

As a mother, it is an honor for me to witness stories of direct change in the lives of many mothers, like Susana, and their children.

Every mother wants her children to be happy and healthy; it is our nature to care for them. Through safe water, I can see both visible and invisible changes in the lives of these women and children.

Water becomes hope for mothers who desire a better future for their children—a future without illness, a future of restored relationships, and a future of opportunities.

Now, Susana can have peace because her children are drinking water that is safe and clean.

Stories like Susana’s and those of many other women in Peru who are impacted by these water projects are truly inspiring. These are women who rise every day to love and care for their children, seeking to change the future of their families and entire communities.

Being a part of Water Mission and seeing how God transforms families through safe water is a blessing for me.

Around the world, mothers like Susana are still in urgent need, lacking access to safe water and fearing for the health of their children.

This Mother’s Day, all gifts will be matched up to $30,000, thanks to generous partners who are giving in honor of their mothers, Clarice Dudley and Beatrice Micklash.

You can also give safe water in honor of a mother in your life, and we will send her a beautiful Mother’s Day card. She will be overjoyed to learn that families around the world will be blessed because of your gift to her.

Will you prayerfully consider helping provide clean, safe water to families this month?

Blessings,

Vicky Espinoza
Peru Country Director

When you give this Mother’s Day, you will double your impact, bringing peace to mothers and health to their children.
