Inspiring Others to Take Action

Water Mission: How did you learn about the global water crisis?
Loulou Byars: I found out about it when I first visited Water Mission’s headquarters in high school. I learned that some people in the world can’t just turn on the tap for water.
WM: What were you inspired to do after learning this?
LB: It made me want to move my classmates into action. My initial efforts were not as successful as I would have hoped: starting an advocacy club, using Facebook, and selling brownies. But a family friend said that letters were a great way to reach people. I wrote letters to family friends, sending four to five every two weeks.
WM: What impact did the letters have?
LB: The letters, along with a match, brought in a total of $35,000 for Water Mission. To witness the impact of this gift, I visited Mexico with Water Mission staff in November 2018.
WM: How did your time in Mexico and your partnership with Water Mission impact you?
LB: It has been so transformational for me. It has taught me that the way Water Mission partners with communities is truly life-changing, breaking the cycle of poverty. I learned that years after first having access to safe water, people are still so grateful. I am thankful to have found a mission I’m truly passionate about.
