Safe Water for Communities

The Importance of Hygiene

January 28, 2014
“We can’t afford safe water every day, and I think if we had easy access to this safe water we will learn to consume it and use it daily and as a result of that we won’t get sick easily anymore,” Yadira, a mother of six in Altamirano, Mexico, told a Water Missions International representative. We hear words like these every time we first arrive in a new community to determine whether or not we can meet a community’s needs. Water Missions International has seen first hand the difference safe water access can make, but we’ve come to understand that this provision is only the first step to a healthier life. Altamiro Children learn proper hygiene techniques from their mothers. While engineers, technicians and skilled laborers work with the community to design and build a customized safe water solution, our community development team and WASH promoters work with the community to educate them about illness and how disease spreads. The team and WASH promotors teach community leaders about healthy sanitation practices and disease prevention and often hold community-wide workshops to teach basic techniques such as how to properly wash your hands. These efforts tackle behavioral threats to health. Ultimately every household is reached with efforts to promote healthy sanitation behavior. While hand-washing may seem like second nature to many of us, it’s a behavior that’s taught by mothers to children, and when taught properly can have a dramatic effect on stopping the spread of disease. Think of hand washing as a DIY vaccine—this small act can cut occurrences of diarrheal disease in half. Health and Hygiene Workshop Our team uses demonstrations and educational materials to teach healthy hygiene habits. Now that the people of communities of Altamirano have safe water access and an understanding of healthy sanitation practices, they can look forward to a future free of preventable diseases. Our safe water solution will last for decades, but by passing on behaviors like washing hands and safe waste disposal, the change will last for generations to come.
