“God Cares About Marriage”: Living Water Training Strengthens Marriages
We believe that strong marriages build strong societies. As part of Water Mission’s Living Water modules, we partner with local churches to hold marriage seminars in many rural communities. Empowered by our Living Water staff, pastors spend two consecutive days with couples, teaching them biblically based marriage principles. Lawrence and Grace Soko have been married for 35 years and live in Mankhaka Dwangwa, Malawi. In June 2022, Water Mission commissioned a safe water project in their community. The Sokos already knew they could trust Water Mission, so they decided to attend the marriage seminar.
“It is important to have [strong] couples in a community because they play a role in that community’s development,” Grace said. In Malawi, more couples than expected have attended the seminars. The local pastors encourage married couples to sit together, a rare practice in most Malawian churches. During the workshops, pastors walk couples through topics like communication, finances, fidelity, spirituality, and children. Couples learn about God’s design for marriage and how to apply biblical principles in their homes.
Through the teachings, Lawrence and Grace recognized communication as an area of growth in their own marriage. “We learned about being open with each other,” Lawrence shared. “When there is an issue, we have to discuss it.” Grace agreed with her husband, saying, “We have learned good, effective communication as a couple. It is love and obedience to one another that builds unity…. We are Christians, and I think one of the roles of marriage is to unite God’s people. God cares about marriage because He created it.” Your support strengthens marriages and, thus, societies around the world. Thank you for continuing to give to our ministry so that couples can experience marital growth.
