Giving Tuesday 2024: Safe Water Changes Lives
Each year during the Christmas shopping frenzy, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to focus on giving rather than receiving. What does it look like for safe water to change a life? This season, we have been focusing on the impact of safe water on the remote community of Ikonia, Uganda. In Ikonia, the only water source was located a long distance from the community. Women and children spent hours walking to collect water for their families, and the unclean water often made them sick. The path to the water source was dangerous, especially for children. 13-year-old Vanisha from Ikonia shared, “In the swamp where I got water, there is a darkness. Some kids have been kidnapped on that path, and I feared the same people would kidnap me.”
In July 2021, Water Mission implemented a safe water project in Ikonia, serving nearly 6,000 people. Years later, safe water continues to flow, bringing health and hope to residents like Vanisha. “With the Water Mission project, I don’t need to fear being kidnapped,” Vanisha said. “Also, now I don’t miss school—every day I am doing good at school. When I wake up, I can just [come outside and] get a drink. It helps [my health] to drink safe water.”
2 billion people around the world lack access to safe water, and 3.5 billion lack safely managed sanitation.
