The Future of a Fishing Village
In the community of Kisima Island, Uganda, Nasira Clementina is celebrating the impact safe water has had on her life. This elderly lady has seen her share of suffering, but now says, “I have a smile on my face since I no longer beg [for money] to buy water for drinking. I thank the Lord for remembering me at this age, and He has provided me with a free [container] of safe water daily.”
The entire community is celebrating the freedom and comfort that safe water brings. Funded by Northwood Church in Summerville, SC and commissioned in January 2016, the project has greatly impacted this community of approximately 3,000 people located on the shore of Lake Victoria.
Prior to Water Mission’s work in the area, community members had to either purchase expensive water from the nearest city or draw unsafe water from Lake Victoria, leading to a wide range of illnesses.
“Our children have been suffering from skin rashes and swollen stomachs due to water which is not safe, but since we have safe water now, this is going to be history.” - Okidi Watmon, resident of Kisima IslandFetching water from the lake was dangerous because of the possibility of crossing paths with crocodiles and snakes, or becoming a victim of crime as many women and children collected water at night or very early in the morning. Safe Water Committee member Amina Nankwanga said of the new water system, "Yes, we plan to use the [safe water] for all purposes at home like drinking, washing utensils, cooking and any other use at home. This will help a lot in [keeping] my children from going to the lake as it is so risky.” Learn more about engaging your church in water projects around the world by contacting our team here.
