The First Country Program: A Commitment to Serve and Love in Honduras

October 3, 2019
Guest Contributor: Hector Chacon, Honduras Country Program Director When I look back at the last two decades, I am reminded of the vision first shared with me by George and Molly Greene, our beloved co-founders: that all people have clean, safe water and an opportunity to experience God’s love. I remember the first time I met George and Molly. I was serving on leadership for the Rotary Club of Tocoa, Honduras, and they had been in the country after responding to the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch. That first meeting in 1998 led to my partnership — and treasured friendship — with the Greenes. I was immediately moved by her passion for connecting with people and serving the Lord. Following her lead, in 2003, I committed to serving as Water Mission’s first country director, leading the Honduras program. Today, the Honduras program has expanded to a team of 25 staff; we have implemented more than 850 safe water and sanitation projects throughout the country, serving nearly 500,000 people. Molly always encouraged and led us to work with love, excellence, and integrity, and in the name of Jesus. My heart fills with joy when I see fellow Hondurans gain access to safe water. I’m filled with even more joy when I can share the news of God’s redemptive love. In honor of Molly’s zeal for the gospel, Water Mission will continue to respond to God’s call in this way — in Honduras and around the world.
