Finishing The School Year Strong

June 3, 2014
As school children across the United States of America celebrate the end of the school year and the promise of summer, the students of Kitale School in Kenya celebrate being free of waterborne illness. The dreams of children in Africa aren’t that different from the dreams of students where we live – they want to grow up and be pilots, teachers or great leaders. But because of access to safe water, these dreams might one day become a reality. Safe water access has made a noticeable difference for these children. “Last quarter no student was diagnosed with typhoid or an amoeba,” one teacher told us happily. “This is a tremendous change since we used to have more than 15 cases in a term.” Safe Water For School Students at Kitale School enjoy safe water between classes. Now that the students no longer suffer from waterborne illness, they no longer miss their classes because they feel sick or have to spend time getting treatments at the local hospital. The school is no longer faced with a daunting medical cost, and can now use that money on elsewhere. “We are also enjoying the school environment because it is more peaceful. There are no students rushing to and fro in search of water,” Scholastica, a teacher, explained; previously, students fought over what little water the school had available for use. Teacher Scholastica is grateful for the safe water that has changed her students' lives. Scholastica has been holding classes at the school where she teaches the students proper health and hygiene practices, including how to properly wash one’s hands. She’s proud of the change that she’s seen in her students. “The students’ hygiene has changed. Their uniforms are clean and so are the washrooms and classes. This has boosted their self-confidence.” Full of confidence and dreams for the future, the students of Kitale School will be part of a brighter future for Kenya.
