Charleston Walk for Water: It Takes an Army

March 14, 2017
On March 25, 2017, nearly five thousand people gathered at Brittlebank Park in Charleston, SC, for Water Mission’s 11th annual Walk for Water. Coordinating an event of this size is no easy feat, and every year, hundreds of dedicated volunteers come out to help make the event possible. Volunteers help with Water Mission's Walk for Water. Betty Bivens has been volunteering for four years and served for the past two alongside Elizabeth Hiott, our Volunteer Coordinator.  Betty says the most rewarding part of volunteering is knowing that she is, “part of a bigger picture, showing others love by providing them safe water and Living Water.” Volunteers help with Water Mission's Walk for Water. For over 10 years, Allan Clum has been a volunteer and enjoys watching Water Mission and the Walk for Water grow.  He works behind the scenes at the Walk, coordinating logistics, making sure everyone has a place to park and prepping equipment to make sure it is ready to go for the day of the event.  Allan says, “Walk On! It has been a pleasure working with the Walk and the staff.” Volunteers help with Water Mission's Walk for Water. Marquia Washington has thoroughly enjoyed her five years of volunteering with Water Mission. The most rewarding part for Marquia during the Walk for Water planning and day-of activities is developing relationships with people who are just as passionate as she is about our mission. When asked how it all gets done, Kyle Whitcroft, our Special Events Coordinator, said, “It takes an unbelievable number of volunteers and thousands of man hours to pull off an event the size of the Charleston Walk for Water.  I am so impressed by the level of commitment and hard work that our volunteers bring to the Walk. We surely couldn’t do it without them." Volunteers help with Water Mission's Walk for Water. This year’s Walk elevated awareness with new walkers and galvanized our returning walkers, and combined they helped raise over $350,000 to bring access to safe water to people in need.  Our volunteers’ selfless actions and time commitment are more than just an opportunity to serve.  They are opportunities to transform lives forever.
