A Beacon of Hope
Many structures like these were destroyed by the earthquake, but not Tyler's water tower.
In spite of all that effort, while I was in seminary three years later, the earthquake of 2010 struck, and I was convinced that I had lost my first structural design to the forces of nature. A few weeks later, however, George called with fantastic news—the water tower had made it! That, to me, is the lasting mental image I have of Water Missions International; when everything in Port-au-Prince was crumbling to the ground the Water Missions International water tower remained, tall and proud, a beacon of hope and a sign of Christ amidst the rubble of devastation.
Hope is, by all accounts, what drew my family to get involved with Water Missions International in the first place. When we looked at Water Missions International’s calling and the work they were doing in communities around the world, it was striking. We could see this hope on the faces of men and women who had never even seen a clean glass of drinking water. Hope was manifest in the darkest of hours after tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, and typhoons. Hope was tangible in two warring African villages, set on the path to reconciliation in part because of the gift of living water. While I was busy daily taking for granted this vital necessity, a simple, clean cup of water was bringing hope to people across the world! How could I not be compelled by this vision?
Water Missions International brings both safe and Living water.
Above all of this, however, is Water Missions International’s recognition that the hope of clean water is a sign of an even greater hope that each of us longs for. When the woman approached Jesus at the well (John 4:1-30), hope was in short supply. Her life was crumbling around her and shame had driven her to draw water in the brutally hot middle of the day. Yet there she encountered Christ and he offered her living water, which in her would become “a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (v. 14)
So it is with this ministry, that the essential water of life offered as needed across the globe would find its source in and point to the Water of Eternal Life, Jesus Christ himself. Such is the beacon of hope that is Water Missions International, offering the essentials of this age while giving us a glimpse of the age to come, where no one thirsts because we drink abundantly from the water of Life.
