2024 Walk for Water Transforms Lives
In spite of cloudy skies and scattered rain, more than 4,000 people joined the 2024 Walk for Water on Saturday, March 23, raising funds to provide safe water to more than 12,000 people in need around the world. Today, more than 2 billion people throughout the globe lack access to safe water. Women and children walk an average of three miles a day to collect water for their families. Much of this water is contaminated, causing illness and disease.
The Walk for Water simulates the three-mile walk as participants carry an empty bucket halfway, fill their bucket with water, and carry the heavy bucket back to the park. Bekkett, a 12-year-old flag bearer leading the walking parade, said, “I feel bad for people who don’t have a chance to get safe water. I want to be here to walk for those people.” Joining the Walk with her young daughter, participant Jennifer Goodman felt similarly. She shared, “When you think about people in other countries who have to walk for water, it really hits home and makes you realize how lucky we are.” Before the end of the Walk, the sun was breaking through the clouds, reminding participants of the hope safe water brings to those who need it.
