Since 2001, supporters like you have helped Water Mission serve more than 7 million people across 57 countries with lasting safe water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions. More importantly, the Living Water message has brought hope and transformed lives around the world. The following timeline highlights key milestones of the Water Mission story you have helped make possible.
The “First Sip”
Hurricane Mitch response the “First Sip” begins a movement to transform lives through safe and Living Water
Water Mission is Founded
Water Mission is officially incorporated. The first Living Water Treatment System (LWTS) is installed in Hicaque, Honduras
Honduras program is established.
Haiti Program Established
Disaster Response: Indian Ocean tsunami, Sri Lanka and Indonesia
Uganda and Indonesia Programs Established
A Year of Impact: Growth, Disaster Response, and Recognition
The Peru program was established. We responded to Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi and Louisiana. Our first health impact study showed a 52% reduction in diarrheal illnesses from our projects. Water Mission received its first of 14 consecutive 4-star ratings from Charity Navigator.
New Country Programs, First Walk, and Solar Innovation
Water Mission launched programs in Mexico and Kenya. The first Walk for Water was held in Charleston, South Carolina. In Uganda, we installed our first solar-powered safe water project.
Living Water
Living Water discipleship program was developed.
Malawi Program Established
Haiti Response and 1 Million Lives Reached
We responded to the earthquake and cholera outbreak in Haiti. Water Mission surpassed 1 million people served since 2001.
Tanzania Program Established
Ebola Response and 50 Countries Reached
We responded to the Ebola outbreak in Liberia, which became the 50th country to receive safe water solutions from Water Mission.
Landmark Project in Tanzania—3 Million People Served
Water Mission implemented its largest water treatment project in Tanzania’s Nyarugusu refugee camp. More than 3 million people have now been served with safe water.
Puerto Rico Response and Community Impact Tools Developed
Water Mission responded to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and developed the Restore Survey to measure communities’ water, sanitation, and hygiene behaviors and assess project impact.
Milestone Achievements, Hurricane Response, and 4 Million Served
Water Mission implemented its largest water treatment project in Tanzania’s Nyarugusu refugee camp and responded to Hurricane Dorian in The Bahamas. Over 4 million people have now been served with safe water.
Global COVID-19 Response, Solar Milestone, and Year of Impact
Water Mission launched a global disaster response to COVID-19 and completed its largest solar array project to date in The Bahamas. More than 1.6 million people were served in a single year.
Texas Relief, Global Collaboration, and 7 Million Lives Reached
Water Mission responded to the Texas Winter Storm, helping restore safe water for Austin’s most vulnerable residents. We launched the Global Water Center to unite safe water organizations. Since 2001, more than 7 million people in 57 countries have been served
