Walking for Water Can Help Change the World

Charleston Walk for Water

When you tie your sneakers and pick up an empty bucket at Water Mission’s Walk for Water on March 30, you’re stepping into the daily reality of people like Hayani — a young mother who walked three miles each day to collect dirty water for her family.

You’ll start your own three-mile trek at 9 a.m., surrounded by a sea of colors, excitement, and 5,000 of Water Mission’s closest friends in Charleston.

In contrast, Hayani likely slipped out of her house before dawn, walking alone to collect the day’s water in the cool of the morning in Terjun, Indonesia.

But today, Hayani no longer spends her mornings walking for water.

Thanks to passionate supporters like you, Hayani and her neighbors now get safe water from a Water Mission treatment system conveniently located in the middle of their village. She’s free to invest more time in her family, community, and work opportunities as a result.

This is why we walk for water.

We walk because we can help change the lives of people like Hayani. Together, we can create a world where the chore no longer consumes a mother’s day, and where children can enjoy school instead of spending hours walking on their own for dirty water. A world where communities no longer fear fatal diseases like cholera, and where everyone — including refugees and survivors of natural disasters — has safe water to drink.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Register. If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late! Spend your Saturday morning learning about the global water crisis — and helping to change this reality — in a fun and vibrant atmosphere. You’ll be surrounded by other walkers who share this vision and are dedicated to the cause. And, you’ll have a chance to win prizes donated by our generous sponsors!
  • Increase your impact. Did you know that just $25 can provide safe water for one person? It doesn’t take a lot to make a tremendous difference. And when you invite your family and friends to support you, you’re inviting them into the fight against the global water crisis. Imagine what you can do together!

Every dollar raised helps to bring clean, safe water to people in need. And fundraising doesn’t have to take much time. We recommend setting a goal and personally reaching out to 10 family members or friends to invite them to support the cause. (Even a text will do!) You’ll be surprised at how easy it is — and how quickly those $10 or $20 donations add up to support those in need.

(We made you some ready-to-post Instagram stories to make it even easier. Check them out!)

  • Bring friends. Double the fun as you walk and learn alongside some of your favorite people! The Walk for Water is a family-friendly, dog-friendly event that you — and they — won’t want to miss. You can even register to walk as a group and boost your fundraising efforts. Together, you can make a lasting difference for people like Hayani.
