The West Central Africa Region Solar Hub

Posted April 8th, 2022 by Water Mission.

Water Mission is dedicated to developing and implementing best-in-class safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) solutions. This innovation is about more than developing stand-alone technologies or solutions. It’s also about innovating for continuous improvement, including collaborating within the sector to end the global water crisis.  In 2021, in collaboration with UNICEF, Water Mission’s Innovation and Engineering Department continued to support a significant investment in training through the West Central Africa Region (WCAR) Solar Hub. Launched in 2020, the WCAR Solar Hub provides free technical support for any organization working on solar-powered water systems in the region. The ultimate goal is to scale ... Read More

Water Mission Partners with UNICEF to Author New Solar-Powered Water Systems Design and Installation Guide

Posted January 27th, 2021 by Jeff Zapor.

For more than 10 years, Water Mission has been utilizing solar-powered water pumping to bring reliable safe water access to remote communities around the world. Our experience and industry research have demonstrated that solar pumping solutions are both cost-effective and sustainable in the long term, offering technical and environmental advantages to communities. But it can be challenging to get started. When solar-powered water systems fail, it’s primarily due to poor design and installation. This lack of technical expertise has been a barrier in adopting solar powered pumping solutions for many non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Community members stand near a solar-powered safe water project in VIlla Maria, Indiana, Peru. To bridge this gap, Water Mission recently partnered with UNICEF to author the Solar ... Read More

Engineer Sam Knobeloch works on a solar array in Puerto Rico.
Posted February 21st, 2019 by Megan Staub.

Seventeen months ago, Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico. It was the most destructive storm to hit the island in more than 80 years, and it made a devastating impact on safe water, power, and health care services. Although it’s been over a year, you have not forgotten Puerto Rico. Your ongoing and generous support has enabled us to continue partnering with rural communities to provide long-term, sustainable safe water solutions utilizing solar power. In the aftermath of the hurricane, Water Mission installed generators in rural communities to deliver temporary power for their water systems. With your generosity and the support of corporate ... Demystifying Solar-Powered Water Pumping

Posted June 21st, 2018 by Andrew Armstrong.

Solar pumping is the trendiest technology in rural water supply today. Much of the interest in solar pumping is motivated by the Sustainable Development Goal to increase water service levels in the most remote areas. A more compelling driver is that rural water users are willing to pay for service that is accessible near or within their homes. There is currently no more promising technology for meeting these expectations in off-grid settings than solar pumping. Despite this high interest and the fact that solar pumping technology has been around for decades, a great deal of misinformation is being propagated. This article ... Read More
