Invite your friends.
Doing something alone is never as fun as doing it with friends. Workout buddies provide a powerful combination of support, motivation, and fun competition. Encourage your friends to sign up and get ready to see who can carry the most water!
Dress for success.
There’s power in numbers. Our goal is to have 5,000 awesome people walk from Riverfront Park to Water Mission’s headquarters and back again. This year’s Walk shirt is the best one yet, so pick yours up and wear it on March 17th. Together, we’re going to represent the need for safe water in a massive way.
T-shirt pickup is Tuesday, March 13th and Wednesday, March 14th from 11 am-7 pm at Water Mission’s headquarters in North Charleston.
Wear the right footwear.
Getting a new pair of shoes is always exciting. But new shoes can create a serious problem if you wear them for extended physical activity. Recently splurged on a new pair of sneakers? Break them in by wearing them around the house or while running errands. Your feet will thank you on the day of the Walk!
Set your alarm.
There’s nothing worse than waking up and realizing you overslept. Walk for Water activities start at 9:00 a.m. sharp, and you don’t want to miss any of it! Set your alarm early. In fact, maybe set two! And get a solid eight hours of sleep the night before. Walk day is full of activities and is guaranteed to leave you happily worn out.
Water is so important! Good hydration means getting the right amount of water before, during, and after exercise. Water regulates your body temperature and helps transport nutrients to give you energy. If you’re not hydrated, your body can’t perform at its highest level. If you forget your water bottle the day of the event, it’s no problem! You can grab a Water Mission water bottle at the merchandise table.
Stretching before physical activity helps to warm up the muscles, increase blood flow, and reduce the risk of a pulled muscle or tendon. Charleston Power Yoga will lead a fun stretching session at Riverfront Park before the Walk for Water begins. Stretching relieves soreness in your muscles after a workout, so it’s one way to make sure you enjoy the Walk!
Pick a mantra.
Sometimes we all need a saying that inspires us to keep going. Feet tired, sun beating down, bucket getting heavy? Repeat after me, “We walk so they won’t have to.” For the 2.1 billion people who lack access to safe water, there is no option to quit. They walk every day — rain or shine, day or night — to collect dirty water. The 5,000 people who show up on March 17th will learn the realities of dirty water and why this event makes a difference. We’re walking for safe water. We’re walking for hope and a future. We’re walking so others won’t have to.
